So there we were, battling Holy Cross in Michie Stadium on Oct 27, 1973, halfway through an agonizing football season during plebe year. Although we struggled valiantly throughout the game, we ended on the low side of a 10-17 final score.
By season’s end we were 0-10, the worst football record in USMA history so far. So . . . what did this experience teach us?
Well, one lesson is that we all are players on 0-10 teams at some points in our lives. The losses are always tough, especially as we absorb the hits on every play and suffer disappointing outcomes despite our best efforts.
Another lesson is that no matter how dismal a 0-10 season was, is, or will be for us, there will always be others who suffer through even greater trials and tribulations. It’s therefore important to support each other constantly because with discipline and perseverance, the tide eventually turns in our favor.
And one last, enduring lesson: we must always strive to Beat Navy in everything, all the time, and by a lot!
